William Munroe (American Soldier)
Colonel William Munroe (October 28, 1742 – October 30, 1827) , Internet ArchivRetrieved 2011-09-20 was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. He was the orderly sergeant of the Lexington militia at the Battle of Lexington and Concord and as a lieutenant at the Battle of Saratoga. He was also a militia colonel and a prominent man politically in the town of Lexington. Ancestry William Munroe was the great grandson of William Munroe, who was captured at the Battle of Worcester by Oliver Cromwell's troops, and taken to Boston as an indentured servant. He worked hard and quickly bought his freedom. He settled in the settlement of Cambridge Farms Parish, (later Lexington, Massachusetts), Massachusetts, in a part of the town called Scotland. Family William Munroe was married to Anna Smith and they had six children. After her death in 1781 he later married Polly Rodgers. William Munroe (December 15, 1778 – March 6, 1861) was an American cabinet-maker and pencil manufacturer of Concord, Massachusetts.Monroe Jr., pp. 147–49 Early life Munroe was born on the Seaver Farm in Roxbury in Suffolk County, Massachusetts.Monroe Jr., p. 146 His father was a merchant during the time he was growing up. He received little formal schooling prior to being a teenager. When he was thirteen Munroe worked as a farmhand for a while at his grandparents' farm in Roxbury. Though he liked farming, he figured that there had to be a better way to make a living and desired to learn a skilled trade. At fourteen he became a wheelwright’s assistant. After working at this for a while he quit and briefly became a cabinet-maker’s assistant. He then worked at various day labor jobs through the age of sixteen. William Munroe (1625-1717) was a 17th-century Scottish soldier who later became a settler in the United States and a Freemason. Lineage According to historian Alexander Mackenzie, William Munroe was born in 1625, third son of Robert Munro, Commissary of Caithness, who in turn was the third son of John Mor Munro, 3rd of Coul, a descendant of George Munro, 10th Baron of Foulis.
